SoulGetting – GoalSetting

SoulGetting - GoalSetting

Pt 2 (the last 5 minutes of this sermon) can be seen here.

In this sermon, I spend some time explaining how to utilize the steps given in our “Power Path” (register for the Power Path on our home page) to develop goals that glorify God.

Caveat Note: At one point in the sermon, I make the assertion that God looks at us and says, “Son, you deserve my grace and love.”

I want to clarify that I get that His mercy and grace imparted to me is totally underserving on my part. I am a worthless sinner saved by grace.

But that is not what I’m referring to in this message. Rather, when God looks at His creation… me, and considers the eternal plan He has for me, and considers His great love towards me, He is not going to respond with “Oh what a tragic mess this one is, good thing I saved him!” Salvation was part of His plan all along. Instead, I believe He looks at us and says “in my perfect will, for the things I have created you for, you deserve to receive my grace because without it you are incomplete and I don’t do anything half-way.”

In other words, God views us through the blood of Christ and in Christ rather than in contrast between what we were and what we are now. “Forgetting those things which are behind… Paul said.

Christians often don’t view themselves in the fullness of the love imparted to them, and this limits their effectiveness. It limits the Holy One of Israel.

Yes, I get that “I,” James Craddock the old man am unworthy to be called a Christian. But, the very act of being made a Christian caused me to become a “new” creature where old things are passed away and ALL things become new.

Soul-Getting; Goal-Setting

The supernatural nature of a Christian’s goals

Philippians 3:7-21

Someday you will all be in heaven, and I want each of you to receive the greatest reward possible so today we are going to look at goal-setting for the Christian.

What a Goal is: The object of a person’s ambition or objective.

  1. What that object of ambition looks like to Christians, and why this matters (To love God and then Others, both through Christ)

Through the law and practice, He taught them to love Him. Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

      • The emphasis on family, marriage, legal matters, taking care of elders, etc
      • The feasts
      • The year of Jubilee, etc

Then in the New Testament, he ratified this commandment through Christ.

Mark 12:30  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

  1. What is this object of love…. Vs 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.  Christ is our ambition

(show WB Illustration of Umbrella of Love.)

        1. Romans 5:2  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Colossians 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
What is this hope? Those riches abound in His love (and grace)

  • Eros – Sensual love that is only allowed in marriage
  • Phileo – Relational love, person to person
  • Agape – God’s love, only found in Christ through faith

2. Why this object of love matters… because ye are bought with a price
I Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Read about this transaction: Ephesians 2:1-10

  • How our spiritual and material objects of ambition are formed
  • SPIRITUAL 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

How to attain that object of love

    1. Vs 7SURRENDER, Identify your gains ie: money, social status, fashion, experiences and give them over to God. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
    2. Vs 9OBEY be found in him by aligning your spirit through obedience with His laws, principles, and promises And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
    3. Vs 10YIELD to Him…  Know Him, the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His sufferings by conforming unto His death
      That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Goal-Setting for Soul-Getting will help you do this by…

      1. Setting goals that are in Christ
      2. Setting them prayerfully & with a meek spirit
      3. Asking continually Let your requests be made known unto God, Phil 4:6 (Ask, Seek, Knock)
      4. Resolve to “Occupy your goals, til He comes”
      5. Testify to others of your goals to recruit support such as prayer partners and to invite them to hold you accountable
